Place of safety | Door of Hope | Glenvista, Johannesburg
When you consider that 40 to 50 babies are abandoned in Johannesburg every month, then you realise the huge and important role that the ‘hole in the wall” of the Mission Church plays in providing a place of safety to abandoned babies that would otherwise have been left to die of starvation or exposure.
The “hole” is open 24 hours a day…..a sensor alerts the people in the house whenever a new baby is deposited there. Sometimes the police or the hospital will advise or bring in babies and others are literally handed over by desperate mothers.
Counselling is always available to any of the mothers if they so desire and sometimes they are willing to go to the Commissioner of Child Welfare to sign the baby over for adoption.
Door of Hope gets the baby’s inoculations done as well as other medical and blood tests. Once complete the baby is ready for adoption.
They have helped hundreds of babies, providing a place of safety and hope as an alternative to dangers, abuse and possible death.
