Ubuntu House was opened in 2003 and is a place of safety for newborn babies. They are a part of the AFM Executive Welfare uMephi project.
The babies have been either given up by their mothers, saved from abortions or sometimes just discarded after birth, and Ubuntu has played a major role in reuniting some of the babies with their biological mothers and also placing many babies with adoptive parents.
Ubuntu House is linked with accredited adoption units such as Procare and ABBA Adoptions.
They also have 29 satellite houses where older children have a home where they are nurtured as well as ‘special needs’ homes where the sick and dying are cared for. Their foster homes are where HIV positive children are placed with a family who will make their lives as comfortable as possible.

Their focus is on the needs of newborn babies and young children up to age 6 years who have been abandoned or abused. There is an alarming increase in the abandonment rate of newborn babies and children who have to put up with abuse and neglect, and a place of safety is a refuge for children with might otherwise have just been discarded and left to die.
The Tshwane Place of Safety Association consists of a network of volunteer families who are screened, trained and registered, and who play a major role in the welfare of the children, opening up their homes and their hearts to care for newborn babies and toddlers until the legal arrangements are determined by the State.
Children in their care are babies and toddlers in crisis – children who have been abandoned or abused or with special needs.

ABBA is a Christian short-term place of safety for babies in need, usually up to 6 months of age or until the babies are medically and legally ready for adoption. Their babies are tested at birth to determine if they were exposed to HIV at birth.

The focus of ABBA House is to match the tiny baby up with a loving family who will provide a stable home experience where a sense of belonging and values will be instilled in the important formative years.
ABBA House falls under SA Cares for Life, which networks with the Impact Mobilisation Department of Hatfield Christian Church.
Their babies are legally placed with them by the social workers at ABBA Adoptions of the Apostolic Faith Mission Executive Welfare Council.
Abba House answers the growing need of abandoned babies in South Africa and they care passionately for the orphans or abandoned babies who are placed for a short while in their tender care.

When you consider that 40 to 50 babies are abandoned in Johannesburg every month, then you realise the huge and important role that the ‘hole in the wall” of the Mission Church plays in providing a place of safety to abandoned babies that would otherwise have been left to die of starvation or exposure.
The “hole” is open 24 hours a day…..a sensor alerts the people in the house whenever a new baby is deposited there. Sometimes the police or the hospital will advise or bring in babies and others are literally handed over by desperate mothers.
Counselling is always available to any of the mothers if they so desire and sometimes they are willing to go to the Commissioner of Child Welfare to sign the baby over for adoption.
Door of Hope gets the baby’s inoculations done as well as other medical and blood tests. Once complete the baby is ready for adoption.
They have helped hundreds of babies, providing a place of safety and hope as an alternative to dangers, abuse and possible death.

Abandoned to face the world on their own, many South African children face a bleak future devoid of love and care but for the help of places like Impilo. Impilo was started by two social workers who established a place of safety for children in 2003.
Their focus is on providing a place of safety to abandoned and needy babies and meeting their physical, medical, social, emotional and psychological needs while waiting to be returned to their parents or placed in an adoptive home.
They also provide counselling to the biological families of the children regarding decision making about the future of the children. Impilo’s purpose is primarily preventative, and parents are educated in the options available to them when they are unable to look after their child.
In order to find permanent families for the children, there are various programmes to recruit adoptive and foster parents who are screened and prepared for placement.
